How to Compare Quotes

Make sure the area to be worked on is the same size on each quote.
Some paving companies may have measured your site differently or interpreted your wants differently.

Compare the job specifications.
This way you can be sure that you are comparing “apples to apples.” Is one contractor skipping a step or is another recommending a different service?

Ask the contractor why they are recommending something different.
A good contractor will be able to explain their quote and reasons for the recommended scope of work.

For paving jobs, be sure the thickness of the asphalt is the same on each bid.
Asphalt mix is expensive and even small variations in thickness can lead to big price differences.

Check with your contractor to make sure they are fully insured before beginning your project.
Many small, one-person companies and so-called fly-by-night companies carry no insurance other than automotive. If they damage your property or get injured on your property, you can be held liable!

Ask for customer references.
Good contractors will have positive customer testimonials and will be able to provide references for you to look at.

Follow your instincts.
If a contractor isn’t willing to take the time to discuss your quote with you over the phone or meet with you in person to walk over the job site, what will happen when they actually begin work?

Follow your gut and choose a contractor you are comfortable with and can trust.
If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I want to thank you for the job last fall as well as the job this summer. Your work is very good and affordable. I did not have any holes or heaves this spring. There were some large trucks on the asphalt this spring with no damage. I know I have a quality driveway.
